Reason:
For our Wikipedia project, we are choosing to take the article Commercialization of the Internet and expand on it. We chose to do this rather than to create a new article because a big aspect of being in the Wiki community is teamwork. We noticed an article, based on a very intriguing topic, that requires lots of work. As a group, we hope to develop this article and turn it into a valid piece of text that others can gain knowledge from.
Commercialization of the internet is a concept that we have studied heavily in class and on our own for our research papers. We know the repercussions that it has had on society, freedom, and privacy. Choosing to expand on this article is important to spread the word around to anyone who may be in our shoes at this moment: newly exposed to the harsh truths behind the internet. The misreading of false information is a subject that has negative impacts on everyone, and Wikipedia is a platform for the people, by the people. Our hope is to do right by ourselves and for every future reader of this article.
The Wikipedia page lacks content, hence the two sections are the only written aspect in the article itself. Commercialization of the internet, within this article, there is a lot to expand on (the paragraph above) and the lack of information won’t be helpful for someone trying to get an understanding of what, who, when, where, why and how commercialization of the internet is known today.
With a provided foundation, there is a lot that our group would like to explore regarding this article.
Going forward…
We plan to do some more research about Commercialization of the Internet so we can learn more about it and teach others about it. Research/Sources:
Research/Sources:
- The article lacks references in certain parts and we plan on finding resources where the information can be credited to.
- For our research, we will be using the Baruch Newman Library Database, in a manner similar to that which we used for our individual research papers. We will look for more peer-reviewed sources, to ensure that we have the most up to date, accurate information. When transferring said findings into the article, we will paraphrase and give credit where it is due.
- We will also use sites such as Google Scholar and Gale.
- Optionally, we can use sources from the see also pages to look for more related information and sources.
- Citations play a big role in this article. There are a plethora of hyperlinks within the content and many of them are not correctly cited. It will be a priority of us to ensure that all of the information, both existing and newly added by our group, are cited both in the bibliography and in-text.
Content:
- In general, this article is very vague and it needs to be developed more.
- The article can also be unorganized and we plan to make clear distinctions between specific topics, not only between different time periods.
- Since there is already information on the article; in the first section, Early History, we can go further in depth, expand more on the different topics that have been written down.
- Additionally, the Early History portion of the article discusses the background of commercialization within the internet. However, we live in a time frame where everything is changing at a rate that has yet to be seen.
- The time frame in the Early History portion is 1988-1993, but this does not seem long enough considering all the changes that have occurred since.
- There are also many events that have occurred between the two years and therefore we can further break down the time period.
- It is crucial to avoid mixing in outdated information with information that has come forward recently.
- When discussing the present situations of commercialization, we will discuss from the year 2000 and so forth. We will add to the contents list a new section called 1994-2000.
- A lot of the article heavily focuses on the past. There is no sign of present circumstance or future repercussions of commercialization of the internet. Our group is going to fix this issue by reformatting the article as a flow of events, almost in the form of a timeline.
- In the See Also section of the article, there are a few subjects that are intertwined with the Commercialization of the Internet. We believe it would do justice to the article if we were to elaborate on some of these within the existing article, such as E-commerce and Information economics. All of these concepts are part of commercialization of the internet, and thus need to be discussed inside of the content rather than just in the See Also portion.
- Include examples (such as companies) where the internet was/is used to commercialize.
- We would like to focus more on the hyperlinks within the text, such as Compuserve and NSFNET, to expand on what these actually are in order to ensure that readers have a full grasp on the information in front of them.

- This is a peer-reviewed scientific journal, so it should be a reliable source for a specific fact. Since it only dedicates a few sentences to the topic, it can't be used to establish notability.
