[1]=== Nilakkottai was a very fine palayam, consisting mainly of arable lands.” For his military help to the emperor of Vijayanagar in repelling a invasion, Makkala Nayaka, of the Kambala caste, was rewarded with lands west of Madura where, with the krishna devaraya Raya’s permission, he built the mud fort of Nilakkottai in 1366,A.D. He ruled for 12 years and was succeeded by his son Kulappa Nayaka. Along with the Pandya king chandra sekara of Madura, Kulappa was dispossessed by a Chola prince veera sekara chozha , and both defeated rulers appealed to the krishna deva raya Raya for help ===
He was the son of Nagama Nayaka, the successful general of Krishnadevaraya in the Vijayanagara empire. In the early 16th century, the Chola ruler Veerasekara Chola invaded the Madurai country and deposed the Pandya king Chandrasekara Pandyan. The Pandya king was under the protection of the Vijayanagara empire[2] and he appealed to the court of Vijayanagara, and an expedition under Kotikam Nagama Nayaka was sent to his aid.[3][4] Nagama suppressed the Chola ruler and took Madurai, but then suddenly he threw off his allegiance and declining to help the Pandya king, usurped the throne. The Vijayanagar emperor demanded that someone cure the defection: Nagama’s own son, Viswanatha, volunteered, and the king sent him with a large force against the rebel. He overthrew his father and handed him over to the emperor and as a reward for his loyalty the king appointed Viswanatha Nayaka as the governor of Madurai and other provinces in the Tamil country thus leading to formation of the Nayak Kingdom of Madurai When Viswanatha was appointed governor of Madura, Nilakkottai and big nine neighboring villages were restored to Kulappa, who was also granted kaval rights over several other villages. , When viswanathanayakka ruled tamil nadu ,kulappanayakka helped him in many wars with his troops ;when pandiya was giving trouble to madurai country ;;Kulappa nayakkar controlled their did revolt with his troops. After vishwanatha nayak, madurai was ruled by krishappanayakka(1554-72) ;kulappanayakka had the good relationship with krishnappanayakka ; At that time, Head of thottiyam thambachi nayakkan refused to pay his kist(tax) to maduar kingdom and was uncontrollable ;kulappanayakka and his troops went with his troops and controlled him After some years sadaikka devar of ramnad sethupathi also refused pay kisti (tax) to emperor of madurai;the madurai king thirumalai nayakkar declared a war against the devar sethupathi at the year of 1639 ;kulappa nayakkar joined on that war with his troops;on that war the head of ramnad troops vanniya devan was killed with sword and on nayak troops virupakchinayakkan;kamatchi nayakkan was also killed. After some days king of ramnad sadikka sethupathi flee to thalai mannar(rameshwaram). At that time we can reach only by going a boat,,,so kulappanayakka built a bridge and went there and arrested the king of ramnad thus;the 12th polegar, helped the Nayaka of Madura capture the Sethupati of Ramnad.
Nagama kulappaNayaka, the 13th polegar, replaced the old mud fort of Nilakkottai with a stone structure. Chindama Nayaka, the 15th polegar, came under the rule of Hyder Ali when Dindigul was conquered by Mysore. At the time Dindigul was ceded to the Company, the palaiyam’s borders were being contested by its neighbors. McLeod, who became CollecTor of Dindigul during the rule of the 17th polegar, was sympathetic to the polegar. He restored the two villages confiscated by Hyder Ali, which were, however, confiscated again by his successor,
