LED - Structure in brief
Light-emitting Diode
LEDs are vital for any Optical Communication System. It functions by converting the electrical signal to light signal. It acts as a source to the Optical Fiber Communication.
Structures:
The LED is constructed by forming a simple pn of a semiconductor. Such an LED is called a homojunction LED where the junction that is formed consists of the same semiconductor material.
In general the structures are of 2 types:
Homojunction
Heterojunction
Practically the single and in particular the double heterojunctions are used instead of homojunctions LEDs because it offers:
High radiance
High quantum efficiency
Carrier confinement
Optical confinement. ...
