Dr. RS PRAVEEN KUMAR is an IPS officer of 1995 batch, India. He is a vet by education; completed his masters in veterinary sciences from the Andhra Pradesh Agricultural University, Hyderabad. He also holds the prestigious Master in Public Administration from Harvard University and is an Edward. S. Mason Fellow. Dr.R.SPRAVEEN KUMAR is widely known as the brain behind the success story of the Everest conquerors, Malavath Purna and Sandhanapalli Anand Kumar. Malavath Purna, a 13-year-old tribal student from Nizamabad District in Telangana State, created a spine-tingling history on 25th May, 2014 by becoming the youngest girl in the world to scale the Mount Everest and Anand Kumar is the first boy from APSWREIS to scale Mount Everest. He is also the founder of SWAEROES (Social Welfare Aeroes - Greek for sky) network. Dr.R.S PRAVEEN KUMAR choose to serve the cause of education over his lucrative police officer career. His innovative project at TSWREIS had won laurels for imparting quality education in government schools. Students from his schools had consistently shown extraordinary performance and have made it to reputed institutions such as IITs and NITs. Now, in the role of Secretary of Telangana Social Welfare Residential Educational Institutions Society, Government of Telangana, he is replicating his successes in Telangana


An IPS officer DR.R.S PRAVEEN KUMAR of Telangana is doing something extraordinary and now he is a hero for many. No, he is not playing a ’Dabang’ police wala, or an encounter specialist or a no-nonsense man in uniform.

Meet 53-year-old RS Praveen Kumar, an IPS officer of the 1995 batch. In his civil uniform, Dr. Praveen Kumar is changing the destiny of many underprivileged in the state of Telangana.

Widely known as the brain behind the success story of the Everest conquerors Malavath Purna and Sandhanapalli Anand Kumar as well as several other tribal and underprivileged students of Telangana, he is now an inspiration for many as he heads the Telangana Residential Education Society.

Malavath Purna, now in her 20s, is a tribal student from Nizamabad district in Telangana state, who has conquered six out of seven summits of the world including Mount Everest. Purna scaled Mount Everest on 25th May 2014 and become the youngest girl in the world to scale the highest peak in the world.

While Bollywood movie maker Rahul Bose made a movie on her, another boy from a government-run residential school, Anand Kumar, became the first boy scaling the Everest.

Changing fate of students

The residential welfare school of Telangana is changing the fate of many such underprivileged students in the state and credit goes to Praveen Kumar, who has completed his 8th year heading the education society, creating an infrastructure for the tribal and backward student with immense potential and dreams.

Dr. Praveen Kumar was born on 23 November 1967 in a remote village, Alampur near the Nallamala forest of Mahabubnagar to teacher parents.

He, while growing up, faced many hurdles and also caste discrimination but it never deterred him. He completed his masters in veterinary sciences, went to Harvard University, and became an Edward. S. Mason fellow.

As a man in uniform, he also handled several key law & order assignments in the erstwhile Andhra Pradesh but he always wanted to do something for the underprivileged. He opened to head the education society and while he completed his 8th year and entering into 9th, he is working hard to ensure quality education for tribal and SCs in Telangana.

About Telangana Residential Education Society

The Telangana Residential Education Society has 2 lakhs students studying across the state in its residential schools. These schools provide class 5th to graduation level studies to underprivileged students free of cost.

Currently, it has 268 residential schools, out of which, 179 residential schools are dedicated to ST students. Women education is the prime focus of the educational society, which runs 47 schools for girls coming from underprivileged sections of the state.

30 degree colleges are reserved for SC women while 17 are for tribal women. The society has 5 tribal boys’ residential schools too.

The educational society also runs a school of fine arts, Sainik schools, movie-making schools, schools preparing students for the armed force, and other competitive examinations. The society has also established a special college named Telangana Social Welfare Residential Armed Forces Preparatory Degree College for Women.
