Arithmetic is the study of discrete number, obtained by counting. Music is applied arithmetic.
Geometry the study of continuous number, obtained by measuring. Astronomy is applied geometry.
Instead of applied math, the high school (and university) math departments have us peforming meaningless calculations that deserve to be called "numerical fiction" instead of mathematics. We should adopt the Aristotelian realist philosophy of mathematics instead.

[edit]- Spherical trigonometry: geometry applied as actual earth measurement, a subset of astronomy. Useful in geodesy, navigation.
