Tequesta Tribe

The Tequesta tribe lived in south east Florida around the best Biscayne area. The tribe became extinct after the Europeans discovered and began to explore America. Juan Ponce de Leon was met and attacked by the Tequesta when he and his crew landed in Florida.

The Tequesta lived by the water and use the river for travel. They spent their days hunting and gather. They ate vegetation but did not grow their own foods. Rather, they ate from the local plants which were mainly nuts and berries. They hunted for deer and rabbits. In the nearby waters they fished for a variety of fish, mammals and shellfish. They used shells and bones to create fishhooks and tools. They used palmetto trees to make breech cloths for the men and Spanish moss as skirts for the women.
