Jan Allerd de Boer became an amateur astronomer in his high school years and graduated in astronomy at the University of Groningen in 1971. Followed courses computer science at the Open University of the Netherlands. Was a regular work student for the operations of the 25 m radio telescope at Dwingeloo. Was involved in radio astronomical research with the Dwingeloo Telescope and Westerbork Synthesis Radio Telescope, taught The Evolving Universe for non science majors. Worked at the University of Groningen as administrator of the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute [1] and of the Subfaculty of Physics, and as management information specialist of the Faculty of Mathematics and Natural Sciences. Retired. Was awarded the Academy Plaque of the University of Groningen.
After retirement volunteer of the Kapteyn Astronomical Institute for introductory courses astronomy and for the Blaauw observatory. Active in the outreach of astronomy since his academic study. Teaches classes astronomy for adults and elementary schools. Advisory member of the editors of Zenit 1976-88 [2]. Now secretary of the Royal Netherlands Association for Meteorology and Astronomy [3]), P. van Leeuwen Boomkamp Foundation for Astronomy, and the Royal Eise Eisinga Planetarium.
Honorary member Groningen Association for Meteorology and Astronomy.
Minor planet (asteroid) 12629 Jandeboer is named after him.
Plays violin since 1952, 1960-64 in RJO (is presently Jeugdorkest Nederland [4]), viola since 1983, e.g. in Symfonieorkest Scaramouche.
