I LOVE LINGUISTICS

I'm an undergraduate studying Linguistics & Multilingual Studies in Nanyang Technological University (NTU). As an assignment for HG2052 Language, Technology and the Internet, we are required to edit a Wikipedia page. I'm looking forward to contribute my knowledge to Wikipedia. :)

Common misconceptions about a Linguistics student:

[edit]

1. "You must be a polyglot!" (a person who knows several languages)
Reality: Not necessarily, though learning more languages helps in understanding of the concepts in Linguistics.

2. "Your must have high proficiency in English language!"
Reality: Some proficiency in English is needed in order to read the text and learning materials.

3. "Your grammar must be very good!"
Reality: Linguists take a rather strong position against prescriptivism. Linguistically, grammar should be descriptive, not prescriptive.
