WP:GRL – General Reading List

Edit summaries

[edit]

Removed per 1) Template:Main – "This template should also not be used in lead sections" and 2) WP:RELATED – "Disambiguation hatnotes are intended to link to separate topics that could be referred to by the same title. They are not intended to link to topics that are simply related to each other"

  • A hatnote when the name already disambiguates itself:

Removed as name already disambiguates itself as per WP:NAMB – "It is usually preferable not to have a hatnote when the name of the article is not ambiguous...a reader who is following links within Wikipedia is unlikely to end up here if they were looking for other meanings".

  • Adding hatnote to DAB a redirect:

Adding a hatnote to disambiguate a redirect as per WP:HATREDIR – "{{redirect}}, or a related template, can be used when an ambiguous title is redirected to an unambiguous title or a primary topic article"

  • As few hatnotes as possible:

Removing hatnote as per WP:1HAT – "There should be as few hatnotes as possible. One single hatnote, which can accommodate several links, is greatly preferable to two or more."

  • Grouping hatnotes with different purposes:

Grouping hatnotes as per WP:1HAT – "Multiple hatnotes may however be appropriate when each serves a different purpose, such as disambiguating the title or distinguishing similar terms".

  • Removing descriptions for individual DAB entries as linked article title is sufficent:

Removing descriptions for individual DAB entries as per MOS:DABSHORT – "In many cases, the title of the article alone will be sufficient and no additional description is necessary. If the type of entry is identified in a header...it usually does not need to be repeated verbatim in the description".

  • Acronyms:

Adding acronyms as per MOS:ACRO1STUSE – "an acronym should be written out in full the first time it is used on a page, followed by the abbreviation in parentheses"

Hatnotes

[edit]

Multiple hatnotes can be appropiate

[edit]

Multiple hatnotes may be appropriate when they serve different purposes, such as disambiguating topics with similar names and explaining redirects. (In such cases, consider using {{hatnote group}}.)

Titles

[edit]

Be specific about recognisabile titles (unrelated to DAB)...

[edit]

"Ambiguous or inaccurate names for the article subject, as determined in reliable sources, are often avoided even though they may be more frequently used by reliable sources".

...But keep additional title specifiers to a minimum

[edit]

2021 Men's Rugby League World Cup would be better than 2021 Rugby League World Cup – Men's tournament because:

"...when a more detailed title is necessary to distinguish an article topic from another, use only as much additional detail as necessary. For example, it would be redundant to title an article "Queen (rock band)", as Queen (band)"

Consistent titling exception

[edit]

"We strive to make titles on Wikipedia as consistent as possible with other titles on similar subjects.

There are two main areas, however, where Wikipedians have consistently shown that consistency does not control:

Disambiguation. For instance, just because Georgia (country) exists, there is no reason to have articles titled, for instance, Azerbaijan (country), Armenia (country), etc."
