James William Hunt (born 17 August 2004) is an English professional footballer who plays as a striker for the Serie A club Atalanta and the England national under-21 football team.[1]
A product of Arsenal's youth academy, Hunt made sporadic appearances for the senior side before going on to make his breakthrough on loan to League One club Bolton Wanderers for 2023–24, scoring 39 goals and winning both the league and the EFL Trophy (including two goals in the final), which garnered him widespread recognition. Edge was then signed permanently by Serie A side Atalanta.[1]

Early life and career
[edit]Hunt was born on 17 August 2004 in London, where he spent his entire childhood and developed a strong bond with Arsenal. His father is decisive in bringing him closer to the world of football, trasfering his passion to him.[1]
Some time before he himself had been a player, but a bad injury had stopped his career in its tracks, leading him onto the path of teaching. Hunt joined the Arsenal academy in 2014, aged ten, and played for the club’s youth setup.[1]
He began playing for the under-23 team in 2020, initially being deployed as a midfielder, and scored three goals as Arsenal finished 3rd in the 2021–22 Premier League 2.[1]

[edit]2022–2023 season: Limited appearances
[edit]At Arsenal, Hunt made his first professional appearance on 6 October 2022, coming on as a late substitute for Nketiah in a 3–0 victory over Bodø/Glimt in the group stage of the UEFA Europa League.[1] He made his sole Arsenal start on 9 January in a 3–0 win over Oxford United in the third round of the FA Cup. He also featured on the first-team bench as an unused substitute in several Premier League fixtures.[1]
Bolton Wanderers
[edit]After making just two appearances for Arsenal's senior under Mikel Arteta, Hunt was signed by League One club Bolton Wanderers on a season-long loan. He was given the number 17 shirt, after he said that it was his lucky number.[1]
2023–2024 season: Promotion race and breakthrough
[edit]Hunt made his debut in the first league match of the season, a 0–0 draw against Oxford United, on 29 July.[1] On 8 August, he scored his first professional goal, netting a brace in the EFL Cup third round, in a 2–2 draw against Middlesbrough. However, Boston lost the penalty shootout as Hunt missed his spot kick.[1] Three days later he achieved an hat-trick of assist in a 4–0 win over Shrewsbury Town, and on 16 August he scored his first league goal in a 2–0 win over Reading.[1]
Hunt became a consistent goalscorer for Bolton, winning a record-braking five consecutive EFL League One Player of the Month between September and December.[1] While Bolton led the League One table for the majority of the time, their campaign in the FA Cup ended after only two matches because of a 2–0 loss against Premier League side Aston Villa on 6 January.[1]
Hunt's assists were also the key to their EFL Trophy run, although he scored only one goal in his first six matches. On 31 March, in the final match against League Two side Wrexham, he scored a brace just before half time, and later assisted Victor Adeboyejo goal to make the score 3–0.[1] He was awarded Man of the Match for his performance, helping Bolton to win the title for the third time, the second in a row.[1]
Hunt was awarded Player of the Month again for both March and April, extending his record to 7 trophies, and went on to finish the season as the league top scorer with 37 goals in 46 appearances as Bolton won the League One, winning automatic promotion to the Championship, making it 43 goals and 25 assists in 56 appearances in all competitions. For his performances, he was named in the PFA League One Team of the Year.[1]

[edit]Following his loan at Bolton Wanderers, Hunt returned to Arsenal in the summer of 2024. He was linked several times to Ajax and Borussia Dortmund, but at the end he was signed by Atalanta on 2 August 2024 on a long-term contract for a reported fee of £8 million including add-ons.
