Tijuana Innovadora is a social movement generated in Tijuana. The movement consists in a series of events such as conferences and exhibitions to showcase the advances in technology manufactured in Tijuana, Mexico. The first event of Tijuana Innovadora was held from October 7-21, 2010 at the Tijuana Cultural Center, and featured lectures by renowned speakers such as former Vice President of the United States, Al Gore; co-founder and Creative Director of Twitter, Biz Stone; Wikipedia's co-founder, Jimmy Wales; and the Nobel laureate in Economics Robert Aumann, among others. Also, sixty exhibition pavilions were placed in the event, with the participation of several companies such as Plantronics, Toyota, Harman International Industries and Kyocera.
Background
[edit]In 2008, Tijuana was amidst a severe insecurity crisis, with drug trafficking groups in dispute for the operation of the border region.[1] Tijuana's residents, estimated in 1.6 million, also had to face several issues such as delays at border crossings, unpaved roads and insufficient police force. Despite this, business and goverment continued with promotion to attract tourists to the city, in order to bring U.S. patients to hospitals, and dental clinics.[2] According to Jose Galicot, Tijuana Innovadora's Executive Director, a group of citizens decided to focus on the strengths of the city, exalting that Tijuana exports 85 million daily, and that twenty million television sets are produced annually for the American market.[3] Galicot was joined by Alejandro Bustamante, CEO of Plantronics Tijuana, and Tomás Perrín of Tips Marketing, and formed the operating committee to develop the first event of Tijuana Innovadora.[4]
Setup
[edit]Bustamante stated that the event exceeded expectations months before its inauguration.[4] The committee appointed Javier Espinoza as Pavillion Manager.[5]
