Projective transference in Kleinian theory is the process of attributing parts of the self to an analyst (or other object, differing however from projective identification in that it is a predominantly intra-psychic process, rather than an attempt to make the other person feel or embody the projected parts.[1]
More broadly, projective transference is contasted with the containing transference, in as much as the former involves the imposing of internal schemas or imagos on the external world, while the latter is a response to the analytic situation as a whole as a containing environment.[2]
