Massimo De Carlo, sometimes stylized as MASSIMODECARLO, is a contemporary art gallery with locations in Milan, London, Paris, Beijing, and Hong Kong. Established in 1987 by Massimo De Carlo, the gallery represents a diverse array of artists from around the world [1]. It is known for its exhibitions that engage with contemporary themes and movements. The gallery represents several prominent artists, including Maurizio Cattelan, Yan Pei-Ming, Jennifer Guidi, and Ferrari Sheppard, contributing to its recognition in the international art community. Massimo De Carlo participates in major art fairs, showcasing a commitment to promoting innovative contemporary art. [2]
History and expansion
[edit]Massimo De Carlo established his first contemporary art gallery in Milan in 1987, marking the beginning of the gallery's expansion. A second space was subsequently opened in Milan, followed by an international expansion to London in 2009 and Hong Kong in 2016. In February 2021, the gallery launched a new venue in Paris on de Turenne (Paris). This Parisian space, inspired by the concept introduced by art dealer Lucio Amelio in 1989, features exhibitions focusing on a single artwork. The inaugural exhibition at this location showcased "Clay Baby" by Kaari Upson, a piece visible both day and night through the gallery's window.[3]
In March 2024, Massimo De Carlo expanded its international presence by opening a new space in Gangnam-gu, southern Seoul. The Seoul Studio initiated its program with a presentation of works by European artists Carsten Höller and Peter Schuyff. Among the notable pieces featured was Höller's "Giant Triple Mushroom," a sculpture integrating elements of a fly agaric mushroom with parts of two other mushroom types. This motif has been a recurring theme in Höller's work throughout his career.[4]
