The Directors Bureau (TBD) is a Los Angeles-based production company and director's collective focused primarily on the production of television commercials and music videos. TDB was founded by Roman Coppola in 1996 as a "fraternity of creative people, under the same roof, sharing ideas and resources." Designed to support and facilitate projects outside the scope of traditional music video and commercial production, the company is noted for their affiliation with directors who work in multiple disciplines such as film, photography, graphic design, animation, fine art, and fashion. Its roster includes Wes Anderson, Sofia Coppola, Melodie McDaniel, XXX, XXXX, and XXX, among others.[1] [2][3]
The Directors Bureau has produced commercials, short films, and videos considered seminal for Prada, Volkswagon, Stella Artois, XXXX, and XXXX.[4][5][6] They were recognized as one of the "most inventive" production houses byAdWeek, and as (XXXX) by (XXXX).[5][7][8]
TDB Special Projects
[edit]TDB: Special Projects was created in (XXXX) to provide consulting services for clients through the company’s filmmakers, writers, and technicians and has conceptualized and produced projects and events for Yohji Yamamoto, Toyota, Intel, W Hotels, and the United States Department of Education, among others. TDB:SP later expanded to include projects unrelated to their production work, and launched The Pacific Tote Company in 2014.[9]
American Zoetrope
[edit]Founded by his father, Francis Ford Coppola, and George Lucas, Roman Coppola is the president of the San Francisco-based film studio American Zoetrope, which he owns with his sister, Sofia. The Directors Bureau houses its Los Angeles office, and is often involved in the production of American Zoetrope films, which have included Lost in Translation, A Glimpse Inside the Mind of Charles Swan III and (XXXX), in addition to a series for Amazon, Mozart in the Jungle, which premiered in December 2014.[10][11]
Awards and distinctions
[edit]Among others, commercials and music videos produced by the Directors Bureau have won Clio Awards, Cannes Lions International Festival of Creativity Awards, MTV Video Music Awards, London International Awards, Cresta International Advertising Awards, ADDY Awards, Epica Awards, The One Club Awards, and the International Andy Awards.[12]
