Director - Navy History and Heritage, Canadian Forces Maritime Command (Retired)
"As naught may outrun the destroyer, Even so with the law and it grip,
For the strength of the ship is the Service, and the strength of the Service, the ship."
'The Laws of the Navy' - Rear-admiral Ronald Hopwood, C.B.
About me
Retired from the Service in 2011 after 37 years in uniform and nearly 2 years more as civilian. I wrote "Customs and Traditions of the Canadian Navy" published in 1985 and "Badges of the Canadian Navy" published in 1987.
My work
My original book on naval customs and traditions had serious flaws. Firstly, it was more an editorial exercise in compiling various disparate existing publications into one volume. Secondly, it left some important questions unanswered by providing incomplete information. Thirdly, it concentrated primarily on commissioned officers and wardroom customs and traditions. It failed utterly to report on how these customs and traditions affected non-commissioned members of the Royal Canadian Navy. I regret that and apologize for it. I am now preparing to resolve all three of those issues by presenting updated research on the origins of nearly every item contained in the original work, and by providing updated information on some topics which were omitted in 1985.
