Barrio Puerto

[edit]
Barrio Puerto sightseeing, from Cerro Artilleria, Valparaiso.

Barrio Puerto covers the area between Plaza Wheelwright and Plaza Sotomayor of the city center of Valparaiso[1]. It turned out to be the first populated area in the city when small houses were built near Iglesia de la Matriz. Iglesia de la Matriz lies in the heart of Barrio Puerto. The little village, established at the church’s vicinity, started to grow and warehouses and stores were built. The area, surrounded by Cerro Artilleria and a narrow strip between the hills and the sea, was subsequently opened as La Planchada street. With the boom of Valparaiso at the end of 19th century, the area turned into the residential and commercial neighborhood of the city, and several emblematic edifications were built, especially in the zone of Plaza Echaurren, such as Mercado Puerto, Palacio Astoreca[2], and Edificio Tassara. Over the years, high class residents relocated to other sectors of the city, Cerro Alegre area, and the commercial area moved beyond Plaza Sotomayor. Nowadays, Barrio Puerto, which is the heart of the patrimonial zone in Valparaiso, is a priority in the heritage recovery plans.
