2017-Present: Career
[edit]Recent Projects
[edit]In September 2022, AneUnhu directed the premiere of Heartbreak Mafia, a jukebox comedy musical he had written in the same year. The musical play was created as an opportunity for actors, who had previously only starred in supporting roles, to take the lead [4].
Heartbreak Mafia is set at a modern-day artisanal bar and tells the story of a group of young people navigating the ups and downs of love [5].
The show was nominated for 3 National Arts Merit Awards (NAMAs), namely: Outstanding Theatre Actress, Outstanding Theatrical Production, and Outstanding Director [6].
Heartbreak Mafia closed on 18 March 2023 at Reps Theatre [7], after having toured at the Reps Theatre, Mitambo International Theatre Festival 2022 [8], and ZICCA Festival 2022 [9].
On 28 July 2023, AneUnhu released his debut single, “In This Lifetime”. The song is a tribute to a friend, Takudzwa Matinenga, who passed away in 2021. The lyrics reference quotes said or about Matinenga. [10]
In 2024, AneUnhu worked as the curator for Shoko Festival’s 2024 Mash-Up Night [11][12]. Shoko Festival is Zimbabwe’s longest running urban culture festival [13].
On 31 October 2024, AneUnhu debuted his first theatre production, The Underground Gang, under his production company “Santu Guild” at Jasen Mphepo Little Theatre [14]. The show discusses the conflict throughout history surrounding indigenous knowledge systems [15].
