Background

[edit]

Hard frost the night before meant that a significant number of train staff were not available on 5 October, resulting in many drivers filling in on routes they did not usually drive. Many drivers, including that of the high-speed train (HST), Brian Cooper, were working on overtime.[1] Whilst Michael Hodder, the driver of the at-fault Turbo train, had driven on the route before, his route knowledge was inadequate and that he had not been informed of any signals passed at danger (SPADs) in the area.[2]
