Crossover Jazz
[edit]History
[edit]Jazz music is traced back as early as the 1700’s. During this time, African Americans in particular used it as a form of music to pass the time and to tell a story. Many slaves sung these spiritual and soulful jazz songs as a way of self-expression. Common themes expressed include religious beliefs and freedom. However, this laid the foundation for jazz music in the 1800’s.[1]
In the 1900’s jazz music began to evolve. Much of the reason for this had to do with the city of New Orleans where there was a mix of cultures colliding. During this time, music styles such as blues, ragtime, and marching band began to merge together to creating jazz music.[1]
During the 1970’s jazz evolved more taking on other forms of music. The decline of jazz itself during the 1970s led to crossover jazz. Along with crossover jazz, smooth jazz and retro swing were introduced.[1]
