Grow It Yourself Ireland
[edit]
Grow It Yourself Ireland (better known as G.I.Y) is a registered charity (CHY 18920) based in Ireland that aims to give it's members the skills and confidence needed to grow vegetables and fruit successfully in their own gardens.
History
[edit]G.I.Y was founded by journalist and author Michael Kelly in 2008. Having grown his own fruits and vegetables for several years, he decided to see if there was a local food growers group in Waterford so he could learn more about growing from people with more expertise. When he discovered there was no such group, Michael decided to set one up himself.
Early in 2009, Michael, with the aid of some of his fellow growers in the Waterford area decided to set up GIY Ireland, with the aim of opening a GIY group in every town in Ireland.[1]
Activities
[edit]Each local group will hold a monthly meeting where there will be a variety of activities, including: guest speakers, seed and seedling swaps, garden/farm visits and demonstrations. Members are also encouraged to form meitheals with their fellow G.I.Yers if there is a big task ahead, such as building a greenhouse or raised beds, gathering in crops or digging over a new patch.
