Scan-Optics LLC, founded in 1968, is an enterprise content management services company and optical character recognition and image scanner manufacturer headquartered in Manchester, Connecticut, USA.
Becoming a woman-owned business and Patriarch Portfolio company in 2005[1], helped Scan-Optics, LLC[2] to weather a financial crisis caused by acquisitions that added to their business in service and software [3], but caused overall revenues and shares to drop in the late 1990's. Scan-Optics is now stable and growing again and holds national certification as a Women's Business Enterprise (WBE) by the Center for Women & Enterprise Certification Committee, (WBENC).
Scan-Optics' records management[4], information and Data remanence and data backup and Data recovery services are supplied to customers throughout North America [5][6] and Europe[7], while its industrial high-speed Digital imaging and OCR SO-series scanners are being used worldwide. Created in the 1960's by 4 Connecticut visionaries, who believed in the future of OCR, Scan-Optics was one of the pioneers driving the switch from carbon paper to copy machines. Scan-Optics drove many of the technology advances in the industry: Scan-Optics developed the image dissector tube and made it commercially available, pioneered an alphanumeric Handwriting recognition system, and introduced key data entry integrated with Optical Character Recognition via a direct computer-to-computer link to accomplish image reject repair. In a 1997 study Doculabs classified Scan-Optics' Intelligent character recognition as "a significant improvement over standard ICR technology" - in tests using 3,400 forms completed from a national sample of the general population, only Scan-Optics' ICR technology yielded a field read rate accuracy of approximately 90% [8] In recent years, Scan-Optics' breakthroughs [9] included acoustic double page detection, context edit [10], the integration of MICR and barcode reading into the recognition system [11], and the introduction of grayscale capability in OCR.
