The Economic and Social Research Institute (Japanese: 経済社会総合研究所; Hepburn: Keizai Shakai Sōgō Kenkyūjo; abbreviation: ESRI) is a Japanese government research institute under the jurisdiction of the Cabinet Office. As a research organisation, ESRI serves as a economic research think tank for the Cabinet Office, acting as a bridge between economic theory and policy.
Its main duties include theoretical research, empirical research, and policy research related to economic activities, economic policies, and social activities, research that contributes to deliberations by the Council on Economic and Fiscal Policy, and development and training of human resources who will be responsible for policy research.
ESRI is also responsible for publishing estimates for the System of National Accounts (SNA) such as Gross Domestic Product (GDP) statistics, quarterly GDP (QE) and annual final figures, economic trend index (Diffusion index), and other economic trend statistics.
ESRI was established in January during the reorganisation of the Japanese government's cabinet ministries and agencies.
