From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

FictionPress is a website intended to allow authors to showcase literary works and receive feedback from other users in the form of reviews. Registration is free of charge and at the current time the website has over half a million registered users[1].

FictionPress was originally the "original fiction" section of FanFiction.Net[citation needed], but it branched off into its own site, evolving from a purely fanfiction media to a site embracing all forms. According to the numbers given on the site itself there is far more poetry on Fictionpress than original fiction.

Users are given a free biography page where they may include any personal or background information about themselves. Links to all their published poetry/prose are also present in this bio page. Other links on each user's bio page include their own "Favorite Stories" section and a "Favorite Authors" section which users can use to express a preference for particular writen pieces or authors.

Features

[edit]

FictionPress offers a wide array of poetry and fiction, having over 890,000 original pieces of writing on display, with many different specific genres for the two categories. This allows readers to select their choice of preference easily, having only to click their favorite genre on the main page.

Also, on 18th November, 2004, FictionPress added many new languages, after a massive technical upgrade lasting for 24 hours, during which FictionPress.com was set at a read-only mode. On October 17th, 2006, the site returned from a 4 day outage with new features making it more similar to its sister site, FanFiction.net.[citation needed]

The languages supported include many Eastern-European languages and Asian languages, such as Korean, Japanese, Chinese, etc. Prior to the massive upgrade, non-English language submission and display support had been at best very weak and at worst unusable[citation needed].

After uploading a document, FictionPress has a "QuickEdit/Preview" function, allowing users to edit and preview the document, so as to check for any errors before publishing. After publishing, users also can make changes to the poem/prose piece by re-uploading a corrected version and replacing the published version.

Criticism

Much like the site it originated from, many authors say that FictionPress has problems with quality control. As stories do not have to pass through any sort of screening process, material that is not properly formatted or proofread can be uploaded. Also, works reported for rule violation—such as being written in script format, or being fanfiction—are not removed in a timely manner.

After a 2006 outage from October 13 to 17, Fictionpress returned with most of the same features as its sister site.
