AMAPOLA FENOCHIO FURLONG

Celebrated Poet and Educator from Puebla, Mexico.


BACKGROUND AND CAREER

Amapola Fenochio Furlong was born May 22, 1923 in Puebla, Mexico. Her life was lovingly dedicated to both teaching and literature with a career that spanned over 45 years. She initiated her professional career with graduation from the ‘Instituto Normal del Estado’ as a primary school teacher. She continued her professional development as a graduate of the Language and Literature specialization at the Escuela Nacional Superior, and finally as a graduate of the Psychology in Education program. During her career, she taught not only in Puebla, but throughout Mexico as a docent for the Federal Institute of Education between (1957 to 1988). In parallel, she was the supervisor of secondary schools in Puebla (1976 to 1996) until the year she retired.


More importantly, she is regarded for her outstanding literary works and her captivating poetry. Amapola Fenochio Furlong’s works are a fundamental literary reference for all of Puebla, and an eloquent vehicle to perceive the richness and diversity of Mexico overall. She remarkably won 64 ‘Flores Naturales’ or Floral Awards for outstanding contributions in poetry and was the literary author of over 7 books containing her spectacular poetic works.


She was an outstanding promoter of Mexican culture and a voice and advocate for those of most modest means of society as not only a poet, but as an educator. She dedicated her professional career to helping other educators as part of the Federal Institute of Education.


Her poetry is an example of beautiful poetic expression. Her ascendant love of her nation is demonstrated over and over again with passion and fervor throughout her works. With her poetry, she increases ones love of culture and enriches the reader with personalities and representations of science, language and art that transport us.

Amapola Fenochio Furlong was also the recipient of highly distinguished awards including but not limited to:


Honored as ‘Distinguished Citizen of Puebla, Mexico’ on three occasions (1972-1975, 1981-1984 and 1999-2002)

Recipient of a copy of the Royal Seal of the city of Puebla for her honorable and excellent contributions to Puebla by King Carlos V and Germany and Spain

Awarded the ‘Civil Merit Award’ in Puebla, 1976

Awarded the ‘Award of Merit and Culture’ in Puebla, 1988

Recognized as ‘Woman of the Year’ by the Personal Medico del Instituto Mexicano de Seguro Social, 1993

Honored as ‘Emeritus Professor’ by the Municipal President of Puebla, 1995

Recipient of the ‘Silver Medal for Teaching and Cultural Impact’ by the Secretary of Public Education, 1995

Honored with the ’Gabino Barreda medal for teaching by the Puebla Congress Congress of Puebla in front of the full cabinet, 1997

Honored as a Distinguished Guest in Mexicali, Baja California; Ciudad del Carmen, Campeche; Ensenada, Baja California; Iguala, Guerrero; Jiquilpan, Michoacan and Ciudad Guzman, Jalisco.
