Life and career
[edit]1997-2017: Early life and education
[edit]Jeon Jeong-guk was born on September 1, 1997, in Busan, South Korea, where he lived with his mother, father, and older brother.[4]
Jungkook attended Baekyang Elementary School, Baekyang Middle School, and transferred to Singu Middle School. He attended high school at the School of Performing Arts Seoul.[5] Jungkook graduated from SOPA on February 2, 2017. [6]
2011: Superstar K3
[edit]Jungkook auditioned for the popular survival reality show "Superstar K3" in 2011. He was eliminated, but many companies had the chance to watch his audition video, leading to him becoming one of the most in-demand singers at that time.[7] Seven different companies offered him contracts, such as JYP Entertainment, Cube Entertainment, and Bang Si-hyuk's company Big Hit Entertainment.[8] After seeing the rapper and future leader of BTS, he ended up in Big Hit Entertainment since Jungkook thought RM was 'really cool'.[9]
2011-2013: Trainee Days
[edit]After signing with Big Hit Jungkook left his parents and older brother in Busan and moved to Seoul, a big capital city where he didn't have close family or friends, and started his trainee life while started high school.
The members of BTS have revealed Jungkook’s personality pre debut used to be reserved and shy and the first months were extremely difficult for him, he used to speak just the necessary and also wait for the rest of trainees to go to sleep to take a shower and eat. Big Hit’s CEO Bang PD also revealed on a interview for the media Osen Jungkook was close to not debut in the group because he used to cry every time the evaluation team of the company asked him to sing, reason why his true talent couldn’t shine from the beginning.[10]
Once Bang PD decided he wanted to turn his new boy group from a hip hop group into an k-pop group, training in dancing became a priority for the company and Jungkook didn't have any previous training or experience on it, reason why Big Hit decided to send him for one month to Los Angeles, California, with Big Hit's dance choreographer Son Sungdeuk. In the U.S Jungkook learned learned urban style, female dancing style and powerful dance choreos by many famous choreographers, the experience helped him to find passion and freedom in dancing, which was different to the method they were using in South Korea, Jungkook gained a big love for dancing that made he even consider quit being an idol and become a dancer.
2013-2014: Debut with BTS and career beginnings
[edit]Main article: BTS
Jungkook debuted with the members Rap Monster, Jin, SUGA, J-Hope, Jimin and V in June 12, 2013 in the group BTS (Bangtan Boys)[11] Jungkook debuted as the youngest member or maknae, main vocalist and center of the choreographies. BTS' debut stage was in Mnet's M Countdown with the tittle track "No More Dream" from their debut single album, 2 Cool 4 Skool, the group's debut counted with moderate reception in sales, but gained attention of fans thanks to their choreographies.[12]
As main vocal Jungkook took the lead in big part of BTS' discography since debut, but he gained attention for his rap in the two first singles the group released "No more Dream" and "We are Bulletproof Pt. 2" for his relatable and iconic lines in the lyrics "Okay, mum, I'm going to the library"[13]
Jungkook gained the name of "Golden Maknae"
One of the most special moments for Jungkook was when he had the opportunity to perform in the same stage as one of his biggest idols G-Dragon of Big Bang, it was in the music show by SBS Inkigayo on September 15,2013.[14] while both groups BTS and Big Bang were promoting together on music shows, Jungkook confessed it was a dream come true thanks to G-Dragon he was inspired to choose a music career “Big Bang G-Dragon is my idol. He talked to me once when we performed at a Korean music program. I was really happy and my heart fluttered.”[15]
2015-2017: Rise of BTS' Popularity, Records and International Achievements
[edit]In September 2015 Jungkook participated in the project One Dream One Korea among other important artists in South Korea joining to produce a song in memory of the Korean War.[16][17] The Campaign called One K Global was launched as a part of a movement for Korean reunification and to contribute to a larger effort to advance regional peace and global security.[18] The song was released and presented at the One K Concert in Seoul October 15, 2015.[19]
Artistry
[edit]During the early days, BTS was promoted predominately as a hip-hop group with strong choreos as tittle tracks, which made Jungkook prioritize his job as sub rapper in live performances,[20] it was later that the group started to experiment with a different styles like electro and pop without losing their hip hop influence, trying to showcase catchy melodies and vocals.[20] Songs like I NEED U from The Most Beautiful Moment in Life: part 1 as tittle track gave Jungkook the chance to showcase his range with occasional falsettos and high notes. Ashraf Khater from Yahoo described Jungkook’s voice as versatile for different genres and specially noted his vocal power for slow songs "While he's proven that he's indeed versatile when it comes to adapting to different kinds of genres, it's the slow songs that showcase just how good of a singer Jungkook really is."[21]
"“I wanted to let everyone know that there is a boy that likes to sing. I’ll continue to grow and become a singer that melts hearts.”"
— Jungkook, backstage of King of Masked Singer, August 14, 2016.[22]
Initially, Jungkook admitted to being self-conscious of his role as a main vocalist of a top group,[23] noting his biggest goal is to improve as an all-rounded artist taking care of the entire production and composition of songs to the choose of concept and art, he also has expressed his frustration for taking so long to learn to use instruments to create beats.[23] Since 2016 he's been focusing in learning to play different instruments like guitar, electric piano, drums and specially the electronial music intrument MIDI to create beats.[23] Jungkook expressed to the Korean magazine Focus[24][25] his current desire to compose a full song to gift music to himself to show the results of his hard work and being conscious of his evolution. He also explained the importance for an artist to participate in the creation of their own music, to him the kind of music and emotions an artist has are different from what other producers, including the own members of BTS, try to express so it’s important to have a cohesion between both “I want to make my emotions into a story and hear it in sound.”[25]
In the concept book from the Wings album released in summer 2017[26] Jungkook stated he gets inspiration from a different range of genres and artists that are influencing his
beginning as producer and is expecting to incorporate into his future releases. He has been influenced by pop ballads, quiet and emotional songs from artists like IU with piano and guitar sounds[26], but he also enjoys loud genres such as hip hop and EDM from artists like G-Dragon[27] and Justin Bieber[28][29], two of his favorites artists. On an interview to Han Eun Kwa for the korean media Korea Joongang Daily[30] Jungkook accepted the members of BTS and producers in Big Hit were great inspiration and motivation to start creating music “Since the others were all producing our entire album, I naturally learned how to do it by observing them. They helped me to understand the joys of songwriting and producing.”[31]
According to Kim Min Seo from the korean media Newsen and Star1 Magazine[32], Jungkook is on a list of idols whose solo debut is most anticipated by professionals in the industry “He has a voice that is reminiscent of the vocals of soulful pop singers.”[32][33] Professionals in the industry also noted the reason why Jungkook is appreciated as the vocalist is because of his soulful and gentle voice charm that distinguishes him from other singers, which makes him the voice-tone bully of BTS, a Korean phrase used when someone has the power in a specific area.[34]
