User:IceandInk/adopt
Hello IceandInk! This will be our discussion page for your adoption. Ask any questions you want by placing a question in it's own section, by titling the section using the format ==title here==, and then putting the question right below it. Please don't erase answered sections, as I would like to keep them. I will watch this page and respond as soon as possible to any of your questions. Your first task will be to put the following adoption template on your userpage: {{Adoptee|Captain-tucker}}. I have put the corresponding template on my userpage.
The Basics
[edit]To help you start editing in Wikipedia, you should read The Five Pillars of Wikipedia, Wikipedia:How to edit a page, Wikipedia:Contributing to Wikipedia, the policies and guidelines, the editing FAQ, the tutorial, and the cheatsheet.
About me
[edit]I have been editing on Wikipedia since March 23, 2008. Wikipedia is a very large project and there are areas that I have not been involved with or have only limited knowledge, so I may not know the answer to all of your questions. But I will do my best to help you to learn the basics and hopefully make your editing experience more enjoyable. You can see from the userboxes on my user page my interests. I am usually online most of the day Monday — Friday with lesser online time during the weekends and I live in EST.
Intro survey
[edit]If you could, please answer these questions to the best of your ability. The more information you give me, the more I'll be able to help you find a good place to get started. Naturally, don't spill your life story — remember this is still the internet, and anyone could read this page. So, if you don't feel comfortable answering something, don't worry, just skip it.
- What subjects interested you in school? History, English, Math, Sports, etc.?
My favorite subjects are English, medieval history, art history and medicine.
- If you currently hold a job, what do you do? If not, what would you like to do?
I'm a professional copywriter, copy editor, web content writer and link manager. I disagree with SEO practices beyond correct page formatting. It's a subject about which I feel rather strongly, so I'll skip the soapboxing.
I also maintain a national pharmacy technician certification. I used to work as a full time pharmacy tech but found that writing about the medical field was more lucrative.
- Where do you live? (For privacy reasons, please don't be too specific. I'm just looking for country and/or state/province. If you happen to live in a large city, go ahead and include that if you want, but otherwise don't post your hometown.)
I live in the United States, in Kansas. Just for the record, I own a Siberian Husky and an Australian Shepherd mix, not a Toto dog (Cairn Terrier).
- Are you good at reviewing other people's work (such as for grammar, spelling, style, or for grading)?
Dad's a sci/fi fantasy novel writer, so I've been doing it for a while. :)
- Are you comfortable using Wikimarkup yet, or do you still need some time getting it to work?
I studied your adoptee page already and your chart made Wikimarkup a lot more comprehensible. I'm still not very practiced with it yet, but I'm working on it.
- What do you expect your online editing frequency to be? A few pages every day, on the weekends only, online every few days, etc.
I'm going to mostly have to do it catch as catch can on the weekdays and the weekends. I'm on Wikipedia a lot during the course of my work, so I can do some of it as I go. However, when I'm working I have to concentrate on my private writing, so I'll probably do most actual editing on weekends.
Tasks for you to do
[edit]The best way to learn about Wikipedia is to really do some editing. But Wikipedia is more than just editing articles so please go the my Adoption Center page and specifically take a look at the Adoptee Tasks section. You will see a list of tasks that I would like you to perform. These will hopefully help you learn some things about wikipedia. To get you started with wikimarkup there is also a brief summary of wikimarkup here. After each task you will copy your diff results here.--Captain-tucker (talk) 09:37, 14 October 2008 (UTC)
Survey info
[edit]Thanks for all the info, first I must say that grammar is my weak point. So you have that advantage there. I own a Yorkshire terrier, we had a Bichon Frise who died this past Christmas named Bailey, he almost made it to 16 years. So we both know the gifts that dogs bring to our lives. Please feel free to ask any questions about wikipedia, I will do my best to answer. Cheers! --Captain-tucker (talk) 01:08, 15 October 2008 (UTC)
Thanks for your warm welcome. I'm just writing to let you know I'm still here, though my work is intense. It's the end of the month deadline crunch. I am still planning on editing as soon as this crunch is over, and I thought it polite to let you know I'm still alive and still working on the adoptee tasks.
