Welcome to my page! My name is Julien McArdle, and I'm a researcher at the Laboratory for Applied Geomatics and GIS Science[1] at the University of Ottawa. GIS stands for Geographic Information Systems, a fascinating field which represents the natural evolution of cartography into the digital age. When you think about it, much of your daily life is impacted by this field: it helps determine where stores are placed, where the buses go for their routes, where new outlying housing developments are built!
Film Making
[edit]As it stands, my time is divided pretty evenly between three activities: my research, my filmmaking, and my 'real' job. Yes, I'm also a filmmaker. I'm the founder of Celsius Studios[2], a film production company. I just released a documentary[3][4] on the subject of Internet piracy (aptly named "On Piracy"), and I'm currently working on a comedy[5]. The film making has led me to participate in panels at a number of conferences, including ISEA/ZeroOne[6] and HOPE[7].
Hobbies & Life
[edit]On the side, I enjoy all manner of things pertinent to computer security. I also enjoy writing articles for a variety of publications, when the opportunity arises, such as PCWorld[8] and 2600 Magazine. As none of the former activities generate any substantial revenue, I work full-time at a coffee shop. The money is then all spent on schooling (or making more films.) Ah yes, forgot to mention: I'm also a Physical Geography student (BSc. Honours) at the University of Ottawa.
It's a pretty hectic life!
