xButyagrus also know as the (Mule Palm) is a hybrid of the Pindo Palm (Butia Capitana) and the Queen Palm ( syragus romanzoffiania.) This unique palm hybrid is known as the Mule Palm because like many other hybrid plants, its seeds are sterile. In nurseries new seedlings are created by the hand pollination, a time intensive process. However some hybrids have been known to occur in the wild in areas where both parent species can grow, mostly in South America.
Young Mule Palms usually grow at a rapid pace and, when established, can be expected to survive low temperatures to near 14F (-10C) or as low as 10F (-12C). For it's cold tolerance it is considered to be a " hardy palm" and it is one of the hardiest feather palms. The Mule Palm combines the hardiness of the Butia palm with the fast growing, tropical fronds of the Queen Palm. Mature specimens are quite rare due to the difficulty in producing this palm.
