Severe Cyclonic Storm Tauktae is a currently active tropical cyclone threatening the state of Gujarat in India and currently impacting the state of Karnataka. The second depression, first cyclonic storm, and first severe cyclonic storm of the 2021 North Indian Ocean cyclone season, Tauktae originated from a tropical disturbance which was first monitored by the Indian Meteorological Department on May 13. The disturbance drifted eastward and organized into a deep depression by May 14. The storm soon took a turn to the north, continuing its gradual intensification trend, and strengthened to Cyclonic Storm Tauktae late on that same day. Tauktae continued slow intensification into May 15, earning severe cyclonic storm status during midday.
Tauktae brought heavy rainfall and flash floods to areas along the coast of Kerala and on Lakshadweep. There have been reports of heavy rain in the state of Goa as well.
Meteorological history
[edit]On May 14, a depression formed in the Arabian Sea off the coast of Kerala.[1] The JTWC began monitoring the disturbance, and designated it as Tropical Cyclone 01A.[2] The system gradually intensified, before becoming a Deep Depression at 12:00 UTC.[3] At 18:00 UTC that day, the system intensified into a Cyclonic Storm, and it was given the name Tauktae by the IMD.[4]
