Typhoon Linda (international designation: 9728, JTWC designation: 30W, PAGASA designation: Openg,) was the thirty-first tropical storm and the nineteenth typhoon of the extremely active 1997 Pacific typhoon season. Although weak and barely a Category 1 strength typhoon on the Saffir-Simpson Hurricane Scale, the typhoon caused catastrophic damage in Vietnam and moderate damage in Cambodia and Thailand. After making landfall on the Malay Peninsula, Linda transitioned into the northern Indian Ocean, where it restrengthened prior to dissipation due to vertical wind shear.
Linda was the worst natural disaster to occur in Vietnam in 100 years. The typhoon made landfall in the southern tip of the country, causing hundreds of deaths and leaving thousands more offshore missing, most of which were reported dead as a result. The typhoon was the deadliest natural disaster to occur in 1997.
