I am a Reader in Geography at the University of Portsmouth, and the principal creator of the GB Historical GIS and the web site A Vision of Britain through Time.

I also run a first year course in which students are assigned stub articles for British parishes/villages which they have to extend, drawing on online sources. The only articles we assign them:

• Are very short (currently defined as being of under 1,250 characters);
• Have not been edited by anyone other than a bot for at least a year;
• Are for villages that are either also Civil Parishes, or are the main settlements within Civil Parishes.

Students get marked on how far they follow Wikipedia guidelines, especially those on avoiding plagiarism and supporting statements with citations, and for how far they engage with other Wikipedians.

I try to keep an eye on what the students do, and I am confident that overall we are improving the quality and consistency of the articles on places in Britain, but please let me know if you come across one of the exceptions.
