The voice performances garnered a variety of responses. In terms of general comments, Screen Rant's Molly Freeman received jollification from them, and IGN's Tom Jorgensen applauded the actors for embodying each character's heroism and for a grounded delivery that "balances well with the fantastical trappings of the Mushroom Kingdom".[1][2] On the other hand, Brian Tallerico of RogerEbert.com found them "uniformly mediocre", and Soren Andersen of The Seattle Times meaninglessly exaggerated, "sound and fury signifying not a whole lot".[3][4]
Pratt was criticized by Josh Spiegel of SlashFilm as "blandly heroic" and The New York Times journalist Calum Marsh as "grating" and "unctuous".[5] His lack of accent was noted by Kristy Puchko of Mashable: "whatever voice Pratt is doing isn't Brooklyn, and it isn't anything particularly specific, consistent, or exciting".[6] Even the more forgiving Freeman suggest he was "not so bad as to be distracting, but not strong enough to be at all interesting either".[1] Less, but similar comments of blandness and near-absence of a Brooklyn accent were also thrown at Day by Los Angeles Times' Katie Walsh.[4]
The animation was acclaimed.[2]
