[edit]In 1950, the Chinese People's Volunteers and the U.S. Army fought in the Changjin Lake area of North Korea. The 9th Corps of the Chinese People's Volunteers divided and surrounded more than one U.S. division in the Changjin Lake area, killing more than 13,000 enemies and turning the battlefield situation. This battle, which recaptured the vast eastern area north of the 38th parallel, was the key battle to turn the situation around, and the Chinese People's Volunteers also paid a tragic sacrifice. "The Battle At Lake Changjin" is a war movie invested by Bona Film Group Limited. [1]The movie "The Battle At Lake Changjin", which was released during China's National Day as part of the congratulatory film for the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party, was called a "war movie masterpiece" by the official Chinese media. [2]It is a 2021 "major revolutionary historical film" that "epically presents the Battle of Lake Changjin". In 1950, the Chinese People's Volunteers and the U.S. Army fought in the Changjin Lake area of North Korea. [edit]During the 17 days from November 27 to December 13, 1950, the Ninth Corps of the Chinese People's Volunteers and the First U.S. Marine Division and the 7th U.S. Infantry Division, totaling about 120,000 men, fought a war against the U.S. and Korea to defend the country at Lake Changjin (Chosin Reservoir). According to the History of Chinese Communist Party Publishing Houses’ "The First Battle of the Founding", "The 10th Corps suffered 19,202 casualties, 28,954 frostbite victims, more than 1,000 frostbite victims, and more than 3,000 frostbite victims who died after treatment, for a total of 48,156 casualties".[2]
Production
[edit]In 2021, as a tribute to the 100th anniversary of the founding of the Chinese Communist Party, the film "Chinese Doctors" and "The Battle At Changjin Lake", which were produced by the China Film Administration of Propaganda Department and led by Bona Film Group Limited, were released nationwide.
Prototype Characters
[edit]• Li Changyan (played by Wu Jing): During an exceptionally cold winter on the Korean Peninsula, the volunteer "Little Knife Company" led by Li Changyan arrived in the Changjin Lake area in extreme temperatures as low as -40 degrees Celsius. Li and his comrades infiltrated the U.S. garrison and killed about 300 enemies before entering the U.S. tents.[5]
• Mao Anying (played by Huang Xuan) The newly married Mao Anying, the eldest son of Mao Zedong, accompanied Peng Dehuai and took the initiative to go to the battlefront as the first volunteer. Eventually, Mao Anying was burned to death in the house by the napalm dropped by the enemy.[6][7]
• Yang Gensi (played by Oho Ou): At the end of November 1950, Yang Gengshi led a platoon of more than 30 soldiers to hold the position. In the extremely cold weather of minus 40 degrees, the soldiers repelled the American attack eight times in 24 hours. Finally the whole team was left with only one wounded man retreating with the company's machine gun.[8]
• Tan ziwei (played by Duan Yihong): The prototype of Tan ziwei is Zhang Fengshan, the leader of the Volunteer Army Combat Team[9]. Zhang received a second-class merit for his performance in three of his participated battles in the Korean War.[10]
• Deng Hua (played by Lin Yongjian): Deng Hua was a founding general of the Chinese People's Liberation Army. In July 1953, after the victory of Battle of Kumsong, Deng Hua officially became the commander of the Volunteer Army. In July 1951, he participated in the armistice negotiations of the Korean War as a representative of the Volunteer Army.[8]
• Peng Dehuai (Played by Zhou Xiaobin): Among the three Chinese generals, the commander-in-chief of the volunteer army, Peng Dehuai, is one of the "Ten Marshals" of the republic.[8]
• MacArthur (Played by James Filibird): In early days of Korean War, Douglas MacArthur was the commander-in-chief of the United Nations Command. MacArthur was dismissed from in April 1951 due to poor leadership, and Matthew Ridgway took over as commander-in-chief

Sequel
[edit]The sequel "The Battle At Lake Changjin II" (长津湖之水门桥) which was released in mainland China on February 1, 2022, is still produced by the original cast of the first film "The Battle At Lake Changjin", produced by Chen Kaige(陈凯歌), Tsui Hark(徐克), Dante Lam(林超贤), directed by Tsui Hark(徐克), and starring by Wu Jing (吴京), Jackson Yee(易洋千玺). This movie is based on "The Battle of Lake Changjin" in the second campaign of Korean War, and tells the story of the soldiers of the Seventh Company. After finishing the battles of Sinhung-ni[13](新兴里战斗) and Haje Sumli [14](下碣隅里战斗), the company faced a tougher challenge and heavier firepower as they blocked enemy troops at the Suimen Bridge(水门桥), a chokepoint on the retreat route of the U.S. 1st Marine Division.
