GGN68 is a non-coding RNA (ncRNA) molecule which functions in the biogenesis (modification) of other small nuclear RNAs (snRNAs). This type of modifiying RNA is located in the nucleolus of the eukaryotic cell which is a major site of snRNA biogenesis. It is known as a small nucleolar RNA (snoRNA) and also often referred to as a guide RNA.

GGN68 is a member of the C/D box class of snoRNAs which contains the conserved sequence motifs known as the C box (UGAUGA) and the D box (CUGA), which are highly conserved for this snoRNA. Most of the members of the box C/D family function in directing site-specific 2'-O-methylation of substrate RNAs[1]. GGN68 features also a highly conserved sequence motif AGATTATGAGAT upstream of the D box, which most likely corresponds to the guide region. It further contains a low complexity region of highly variable length in the midle of its sequence. GGN68 length ranges from 163 nt in mouse up to 289 nt in Tursiops

GGN68 is encoded within the intron between exons 10 and 11 of LARP4 in human . Short RNA fragments deriving from GGN68 were found in human, chicken, cattle and monotremes [2] [3] [4] [5] [6] [7] [8]
