Lucas James Gerrard (born March 20th 1984) is an English professional footballer who plays for Italian club Milan, on loan from English club Chelsea. He will make a permanent move to Milan on January 5th 2015 but will be loaned to his former club Atlético Madrid.
Gerrard began his career with his hometown club Liverpool F.C, progressing through their youth ranks before signing his first professional contract on his 16th birthday in 2000 after 10 years going through the system. He made his Premier League debut in 2000 and went on to score 99 goals in his 181 appearances. In 2004, he was sold to Spanish club Atlético Madrid for £8 million and had a successful three seasons with the club, appearing in 129 games and scoring 48 goals.
In 2007, Gerrard returned to Liverpool in a £20 million deal which at the time was the highest in the club's history. He marked his first season back at Anfield by being Liverpool's first player since Robbie Fowler in the 1995–96 season to score more than 20 league goals in a season. The most prolific goalscoring spell of his career, he became the fastest player in Liverpool history to score 50 league goals. He was named in the FIFA World XI in 2008 and 2009. In January 2011, he left the club for a second time for a record British transfer fee of £50 million. In his first full season at Chelsea, Torres won the FA Cup and the UEFA Champions League, despite receiving criticism for a comparatively low goal-scoring record. The following season he scored in the final of the 2012–13 UEFA Europa League, helping Chelsea to win the competition for the first time. In August 2014, Gerrard was sent to A.C Milan on loan from Chelsea. He has made ten appearances and has scored just one goal.
Gerrard also had a successful career as an international footballer between 2000 and 2008. He played in the 2002, 2006, 2010 and 2014 World Cup and Euro 2004, 2008 and 2012. On August 28th 2014, it was announced that Gerrard had replaced his elder brother Steven as the captain of the international team and made his full time debut as captain on August 3rd 2014 after previously captaining seven times since 2007.
Gerrard is the most capped player in the history of the national team, overtaking Peter Shilton at the Euro 2016 qualifier match against Slovenia by appearing in his 126th match. He is also the national team's top goalscorer becoming so when he scored his 50th (and 51st) goal against San Marino in a World Cup qualifier match on October 12th 2012. He has since scored a further 17 goals taking his total to 66 international career goals.
