Sami Mohammed Alhumaidi[4] is the second Managing Director of Prince Sultan Advanced Technology Research Institute (PSATRI)[5], a researcher[6][7][8][9], patents owner[10][11] and a faculty member[12] in the College of Engineering[13] at King Saud University, Riyadh. He is a well-known national intellectual who has set his career goal to switch the society trend to an innovative and productive one[14]. He was born on October 26, 1965, in Ta'if city of the Kingdom of Saudi Arabia.

Pioneer of technology transfer

[edit]

He is a pioneer of technology transfer in his country in the field of defense and security[15][16][17]. Alhumaidi is Managing Director of PSATRI, a joint venture of Royal Saudi Air Force (RSAF) and King Saud University (KSU) in Riyadh, Saudi Arabia since 2011[18]. PSATRI’s areas of expertise include unmanned vehicles, microwave and antenna radar technologies, infrared and thermal cameras, electronic warfare, optical engineering, signal/image processing and laser technology[19]. Using PSATRI platform, he aims at building national capabilities through intensive applied research[20], offering higher level specialized training courses[21][22], exploring native engineers/scientists, and developing them in an optimal way for self-sufficiency and self-sustenance[23]. As a Managing Director, his task includes; strategic planning, technology transfer, innovation and invention[24][25]. He manages the relationship with international companies[26][27] and strategic clients[28] of the Institute.

Education

[edit]

Alhumaidi got his Ph.D. in the field of Electrical Engineering from Florida Institute of Technology, Melbourne, FL, the USA in 1997[4]. He published his dissertation entitled "Development of a Geophysical Model Function for a Radar Scatterometer Using Neural Networks" [29]. He completed his M.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from California State University, Northridge, CA, the USA in 1993. He got his B.Sc. in Electrical Engineering from King Fahd University of Petroleum and Minerals (KFUPM), Dhahran, Saudi Arabia in 1988[4]. He obtained accredited summer courses from the University of California, Berkeley (1985) and the University of California, Irvine (1986)[4].

Early experience

[edit]

During the year 1998, Alhumaidi worked as Program Manager at Research and Analysis Directorate of RSAF. He worked for Saudi Aramco during 1998-99 as Consulting Engineer in Consulting Services Department performing as an unbiased technical auditor and investigator for Aramco Inspection Department. Alhumaidi joined King Abdulaziz City for Science and Technology (KACST) in 1999 as Systems Engineer in its Satellite Development Center. In 2004, he was promoted to the position of Manager at EW and Radar Center. He became the Director of National Electronics, Communications and Photonics Research Program[1][2][3] in 2007. In his capacity, he was responsible for starting this new applied research program within KACST. Alhumaidi was appointed as Executive Director for Information and Electronics Sector in 2010[4].

Projects managed

[edit]

Alhumaidi managed the development of an advanced target and countermeasure simulator. This simulator covered the threat radar frequency bands and was instrumental in testing operational radars. During 2005-2007, he managed the development of a communications countermeasure system equipped with advanced tracking filters and acquisition receivers. He also supervised the development of an advanced radar signal processor system. The system was designed with the latest technology in FPGA's and high-speed processors. He was able to manage the development of a data security and networking device during 2007-2009. During 2008-2010, he was the manager of the development of an LPI-based surveillance radar system for the detection and tracking of ground and sea targets[4].

Researcher, author & patents owner

[edit]

He has been involved in active research since 1995. He is the author of numerous publications[6][7][8][9] in the areas of radar[30][31], communication, optical engineering[32][33] and electronic warfare[34][35]. He is also patents owner of his inventions[10][11].
