Qutb al-Din Shirazi (Persian: قطبالدین شیرازی; 1236 – 1311) was a Persian polymath, Sufi, and poet.
Biography
[edit]Qutb al-Din was born on October 1236 in the city of Shiraz,[1] which at the time served as the capital of the Salghurid atabegate.[2] He belonged to the Kazaruni family, which was distinguished for its physicians.[3] His father Zia al-Din Mas'ud Kazaruni, was a renowned physician and Sufi who worked at the Muzaffari hospital in Shiraz. Under his guidance, Qutb al-Din studied medicine. He also studied the Qanun (the Canon) by the scholar Avicenna (died 1037), as well as its commentaries, especially the one by Fakhr al-Din Razi (died 1210), which he considered to have many errors. Following Zia al-Din's death, Qutb al-Din, at the age of fourteen, succeeded him as an ophthalmologist at the Muzaffari hospital. He also continued his studies in medicine, this time under Kamal al-Din Abu'l-Khayr, and then later under Sharaf al-Din Zaki Bushkani and Shams al-Din Muhammad Kishi, both well-versed in the Qanun.[1]
Qutb al-Din later went to Tabriz, where he stayed during his final years. He died on 7 February 1311 and was buried in the Charandab Cemetery of the city, near the tomb of Qadi Baydawi (died 1319).[1]
