About
[edit]I am Junior psychology major at Rice University, minoring in Poverty, Justice, and Human Capabilities. I am interested in poverty and women's issues, particularly the intersection of the two. Additionally, I am always trying to learn more about health issues and disparities.
Contributions
[edit]I hope to expand the existing body of information on gangs to include the role of women, both as members and affiliates. This topic has been historically neglected, and merits attention. Women involved in gang culture face many of the same issues as men, but also contain unique challenges, especially with regard to prevalence of sexual violence in gang life. It is only through bringing attention to a topic that we can begin to address it, and that is what I hope to accomplish here.
Currently, I am working on a contribution about the rapid spread of multi-drug-resistant tuberculosis within the Russian prison system. Although it is a highly specific topic, it may potentially have an enormous impact on the civilian population if left unchecked. I hope to raise awareness of the disease, which has largely disappeared in wealthier countries, as well as shed light on the many consequences of substandard prison conditions. Because prisoners are often forgotten by society at large, their suffering often goes unaddressed. I intend to remind others of the challenges faced by this population in addition to discussing implications for the civilian population if this epidemic is not stopped.
