User:Herreshoffian/List of ex-NATO navies by displacement

From Wikipedia, the free encyclopedia

This is a list of ex-NATO navies by displacement given in long tons. The displacement of each ship used was the full loaded for surface vessel or submerged for submarines. The list is divided in 6 categories(aircraft carriers, conventional submarines, nuclear submarines, amphibious ships, major surface ships and minor surface ships) to better compare how navies uses its resources and their goals, from being mainly a navy for coastal protection to a green water navy like Republic of Korea Navy to full blue water navy as the United States Navy.

The minimum criteria for a ship to be counted is to have a displacement of at least 1 000 long tons and have credible anti-ship capacity using anti-ship missiles, thus many missile boats and offshore patrol ships from smaller navies are not counted, excluding the list of many ships that are the backbone of navies of countries like Iran or North Korea. Vessels from the auxiliary fleet are not counted, as well as transport ships with no amphibious combat capability and sea replenishment ships.

Amphibious ships that are also used as light aircraft carriers have their tonnage also shown with asterisks among aircraft carriers, but have their displacement calculated inside the category of amphibious warfare ship.

North Korea's total displacement of submarines are shown as listed by organizations but most submarines (especially the older Soviet builds) are probably out of duty.
