Academic Career
[edit]Dukakis gained attention with his first peer reviewed article, Sex and the City State: Geographical Variance in Ancient Hellenistic Feminist Attitudes while still at Harvard Graduate School. His work is interdisciplinary, combining elements of Philology, Linguistics and Archaeology. He is an authority on the achaeological findings of both Sparta and Athens during the Athenian Golden Age, as well as classical texts of this period, often incorporating postmodern theory into the study of these ancient writings.
He has worked on a number of archaeological digs, unearthing several unique treasures. Some of his most prominent findings are from recent digs around Athens, such as a large marble vessel stand with crouching lion motif[1] and an Athenian black figure pottery cup with Gorgon's head decoration[2]. These are both now housed in the Ashmolean Museum in Oxford, UK, after generous donation by Dukakis. His most significant book to date is A Calligraphers Hand: Ancient Writings and Modern Kinks, published by Harvard University Press in 2009. He has been the subject of a Documentary in the New Thinkers series, made by british documentarian and filmmaker Ronald Nixon.
