Virtual Computer Lab (VCL) The Virtual Computer Lab, originating at NC State University is an early example of what has come to be called "Cloud Computing." It was developed to solve a number of problems encountered in education and research, but which have much broader applicability.
The name should be parsed as The Virtual (Computer Lab) and what it does is put the usual "Computer Lab" on the Internet so the user is "Virtually" in the lab. I.e. while the VCL can and does use cpu "virtualization", it did not originally do so, and the "Virtual" name did not refer to cpu virtualization.
