Peace Parks Foundation
Peace Parks Foundation (PPF) is an international non-profit organisation that was established in 1997 by former South African President Dr Nelson Mandela, international business leader Dr Anton Rupert and HRH Prince Bernhard of the Netherlands. The vision of PPF is to create a network of protected areas across international borders to ensure the preservation of southern Africa’s biological diversity and ecosystem services whilst at the same time supporting sustainable economic development and promoting regional peace and stability. Protecting vast tracts of conservation estate has a remarkable positive global impact. By protecting nature, we also protect the myriad benefits that human communities derive from it. These ecosystem services are essential to the continued existence of humankind. They include clean water, clean air, food, raw materials, medicinal plants and carbon sequestration.
Since its inception, PPF has successfully facilitated the establishment of 10 Transfrontier Conservation Areas (TFCAs) throughout sub-Saharan Africa. These include |Ai-|Ais/Richtersveld (Namibia & South Africa), Great Limpopo (Mozambique, South Africa & Zimbabwe), Greater Mapungubwe (Botswana, Zimbabwe & South Africa), Kavango-Zambezi (Angola, Botswana, Namibia, Zambia & Zimbabwe), Kgalagadi (Botswana & South Africa), Lower Zambezi – Mana Pools (Zambia & Zimbabwe), Liuwa Plain – Mussuma (Zambia & Angola), Lubombo (Mozambique, South Africa & Swaziland), Malawi / Zambia and the Maloti-Drakensberg (Lesotho & South Africa).
