I'm HarryZilber. I became an active user and unregistered editor of Wikipedia about 2003, and became a registered contributor in 2006. Wikipedia is a seminal accomplishment, allowing disparate people around the world—with multitudes of varying interests—to create and freely access knowledge collectively. As was once written in an article comment on Google's Knol project:
“ | There are two essential desirables to the information lay people want to access: quality (freedom from bias, accuracy, insight, readability, etc....) and quantity (breath of subjects/topics and depth within each particular subject). Britannica is frequently cited as the gold standard of encyclopedic quality, while few people will dispute that Wikipedia has the largest reservoir of encyclopedic content, which makes it a very common and convenient one-stop shop for casual information searches and other types of research (to give them their due, many Wikipedia articles don't slouch on quality either)..... | ” |
So here's to the world's largest reservoir of encyclopedic content, which will one day rival Britannica quality!

“ | Imagine a world in which every single human being can freely share in the sum of all knowledge. That's our commitment. | ” |
....which was derived from other mission statements, such as:
“ | Imagine a world in which every single person on the planet is given free access to the sum of all human knowledge. That's what we're doing. | ” |
- and:
“ | Wikipedia is first and foremost an effort to create and distribute a free encyclopedia of the highest possible quality to every single person on the planet in their own language. | ” |
