The Meitei Renaissance (Meitei: Mitkap Thokpa), also referred to as the Meitei Revivalism or the Manipuri Renaissance, is the movement of the revivalism of the traditional Meitei art and culture in the 20th-21st centuries. It primarily includes the Meitei linguistic purism movement, the Meitei script revival movement and the Sanamahi religion revival movement. To additional extend, it also influences the Meitei classical language movement.

[edit]Religious revivalism
[edit]On the 31st of July 2002 and on the 1st of August 2003, the Manipur State Legislative Assembly passed some resolutions to allot a unique code for the Sanamahi religion in the official census data but it wasn't approved by the Central Government of India.[a] On the 5th of August 2022, the Manipur State Legislative Assembly again passed a resolution to record the Sanamahi religion in the official census data using a separate unique code for it so as to officially recognise it as a minority religion of India.[1]
In the 2010s, many social, religious and political activists, associations and organisations struggled through various movements to attain official recognition of the Sanamahi religion as a recognised minority religion of India.[2][3][4]
Script revivalism
[edit]All the newspapers in Meitei language (Manipuri language) will be published in the Meitei script (Meitei: Meetei Mayek) instead of the formerly predominant Bengali script from 15 January 2023 . This was decided unanimously by the script revivalism activists in a joint meeting of the "Meetei Erol Eyek Loinasillol Apunba Lup" (MEELAL), "All Manipur Working Journalists’ Union" (AMWJU) and "Editors' Guild Manipur" (EGM) in Imphal in 2022.[5][6][7][8][9]
