City of Belfast Orchestra The City of Belfast Orchestra was a semi-professional symphony orchestra, funded by Belfast Corporation and CEMA NI. The orchestra was established in 1950 and performed 10 - 12 concerts each year in Belfast until it was disbanded in 1966 to make way for the newly formed Ulster Orchestra.[1] Its principal conductors were Denis Mulgan (1950 - 55) and Maurice Miles (1955-66), who subsequently became the Ulster Orchestra's inaugural principal conductor.
