In her free time, Ward likes to bake and garden. She is a mother to one child, Yarrow, but considers herself a mother to her four cats and eight chickens. She lives in Altadena, California with her partner Kat Ross. Ward's published work focuses on a broad range of topics. From feminist pornography, queer parenting, the racial politics of same-sex marriage, and the social construction of heterosexuality and whiteness, nothing is off limits when it comes to Ward’s writing. She has started several blogs to showcase her writing. She is the blogger for FeministPigs.com. She is a cofounder, along with CJ Pascoe and Tey Meadow, of the blog SocialInqueery.com. Beyond her writing, she was a founding member of “The Miracle Whips” in 2004, which is a burlesque group. She also started the parenting collective “L.A. Genderqueer Parenting” in 2009. Both groups are based in Los Angeles.

Works

Her novel Not Gay has received positive reviews from New York Magazine and the Pacific Standard. New York Magazine states "[Ward] shows that homosexual contact has been a regular feature of heterosexual life ever since the concepts of homo- and heterosexuality were first created -- not just in prisons and frat houses and the military, but in biker gangs and even conservative suburban neighborhoods."[1] On her blog FeministPigs.com, Ward talks about a range of topics. Some of her topics include: queer chickens, why gay men should promote women’s rights, and even children’s books. In one particular post, “I Am a Boy Everyday”[2], she talks about a conversation between her and her son Yarrow. Yarrow states that he is a boy every day. While Ward says that is fine with her, she also informs her son that he can change his mind as many times as he wants. She states that she does not know what impact this has on her 5 year old son, she says “I have no idea what this declaration means to Yarrow at this time in his life, but as someone who studies gender formation, I know that his declaration was/is a repetition of a story that kids and adults have been telling for centuries—a story that brings pleasure but also a lot of suffering.” As of 2015, Ward is working on a monograph entitled The Failure of Heterosexuality: How Sexism Doomed the World's Most Cherished Union (and Hid the Wreckage).
