The Airport Limited Express is the temporary name for the proposed airport rail link and limited express services between Clark International Airport and the southern half of Metro Manila. It will travel on North–South Commuter Railway tracks, bypassing the entirety of the line's northern section towards Buendia station in Makati.
Background
[edit]While the electrification of commuter rail services were proposed as early as the 1970s, it was not until the 1990s when an express service to the area of Clark Freeport and Special Economic Zone in Pampanga was announced. This is after the closure of the original Clark Air Base and its conversion to the modern Clark International Airport. The original Spanish-supported proposal would have used 25 kV AC railway electrification but this proposal did not push through. This was later picked up during the 1999 Metro Manila Urban Transportation Integration Study by the Japan International Cooperation Agency (JICA) which eventually led to the start of the Northrail project with the help of China in 2002. However, as with the original Spanish plan, the line did not push through. It was not until the 2010s did a new service to Clark Airport was envisioned.
Service pattern and stops
[edit]The service will only have five stops which asides from the Clark International Airport station as the northern terminus, all will be located on the southern section of the NSCR: Buendia, FTI, Sucat, and Alabang, the last being the service southern terminus. Therefore, the service will skip the entirety of the NSCR North and will skip several stations in the NSCR South in the city of Manila. It will also be non-stop between Makati and Clark International Airport. This is because service aims to connect the Makati Central Business District with the airport within 55 minutes.
There will be one train per direction per hour similar to the present PNR Metro Commuter Line services.
Fare matrix
[edit]The base fare will be ₱22 (US$0.43) with an additional ₱4 per kilometer. In comparison, both NSCR Commuter and Commuter Express tickets cost the same base fare plus ₱2 per kilometer. However it will have surcharges as it will follow the Japanese limited express template.
Seating
[edit]According to the preliminary design shown by the DOTr, the service will only feature a monoclass seating.
