Tonge with The Haulgh is an electoral ward in the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton in Greater Manchester, England. The ward had originally been known as Tonge (1973–2004), but was altered to its current name in 2004. Tonge with The Haulgh ward elects three Councillors to Bolton Metropolitan Borough Council using the first past the post electoral method, electing one Councillor every year without election on the fourth.

Background

[edit]

Tonge with Haulgh had been one of the autonomous townships of the ancient parish of Bolton le Moors in the Salford Hundred of the historic county of Lancashire until the mid-19th century. In 1838, the Haulgh area became part of the Municipal Borough of Bolton, while the remainder of the township, confusingly, continued with the name “Tonge with Haulgh”. It changed its status from a township to a civil parish in its own right in 1866. Tonge with Haulgh became one of the civil parishes of the Bolton Rural Sanitary District from 1872 to 1894, then finally changed its name to Tonge and became part of Bolton Rural District from 1894 to 1898. Under of the Bolton, Turton and Westhoughton Extension Act, Tonge lost its civil parish status and became one of the electoral wards of the County Borough of Bolton from 1898 to 1974.

Metropolitan borough ward

[edit]

Under the Local Government Act 1972, Tonge became one of the electoral wards of the Metropolitan Borough of Bolton for the 1973 to 2003 elections. Following ward boundary changes for the 2004 election, its name was altered to Tonge with The Haulgh. The ward covers the Tonge Moor, Tonge Fold, and The Haulgh areas of the metropolitan borough. At the 2011 United Kingdom census, the electoral ward had a population of 13,126.[1][2] Tonge with The Haulgh is also one of the seven wards which form the Bolton North East constituency.
