I mean, if you want a lesson on futility give the F1 WikiProject a visit, hopefully your face can survive the facepalm and headdesks

GyaroMaguus (Pronounciation: /əˈr mɑːɡs/ (jia-RO-mah-guus) or /ˈɡɑːr mɑːɡs/ (GAH-oh-mah-guus); alternatively written Gyaro–Maguus; on Wikia as Gyarados Magnus; real name Stuart Stalley (/ˈstæl/; STA-lee); birthday is 4 June) is an English Wikian, Wikipedian, wannabe Comedian, Formula One know-it-all, amateur statistician, Tweeter, QPR fan and an all-round crazy person who appears to have a knack of resolving disputes.

Anyway, I had been a reader of Wikipedia for a long time, and on 1 June 2012, I decided to make an account.

I am an experienced user of Wikia, being behind the salvation of The Formula 1 Wiki, of which I am the Jimbo of.

I initially edited on the Pokémon Wiki, before making my own, then taking over the F1 Wiki.

My real name does not have anything to do with my username. It comes from "Gyarados Magnus", my Wikia username. This is derived from a Magikarp I had in Pokémon Sapphire, called "Magnus" (I was giving my Pokémon real names). This evolved into a Gyarados. This happened again in Pearl, despite a different naming strategy. I called myself "GyaroMaguus" on Wikipedia because I did not want to mislead people with the "Magnus" part of my username. In fact, the letters "G" and "M" are not in my real name at all.

I have a vast knowledge of Formula One, with a good amount of knowledge on Association Football and many other assorted subjects. Despite this, I rarely edit away from F1.

My signature has a link to this page in the word "Gyaro", and to my talk page in the word "Maguus". It has an en dash in the middle, and clicking on that en dash links to my contributions.

I have potential admin qualities (as shown on the F1 Wiki), but not too sure that I would be comfortable being an admin here. I will never nominate myself.

My edits on Wikipedia typically are maintainance edits and fixes. If no-one has talked to me recently, then I achieving my goals on Wikipedia.

This is more or less all I do: correcting hyphens into en dashes (- to –) and double hyphens (--) into em dashes (—); I change text to do with links which have brackets in them and showing; correct use of italics (including titles); references with incorrectly-written parameters; and discussions regarding F1 articles.

I have a habit of forgetting to mark edits which would class as minor as minor edits. Apologies.

I was taught Latin by Ricagambeda (J. Shaw) as a Year 7 in Wilson's School. I am a cousin of Rupert Quiney, a professional ice hockey player and a former U19 GB international. I have met David Nutt, was once on stage with Joe Pasquale, and have had a Tumblr ask about signing boobs and another regarding a Chrome extension (here is said extension) replied to by Wil Wheaton.

My surname just so happens be the stage name of Stalley, an American rapper. I am not a fan.

Editing milestones

Wikichecker edit count / New WikiChecker / X!'s gadget

Notes:

  • The numbers are the numbers in the "Preferences" section. Other totals may or may not agree with these figures.
  • The 300th and 750th edits were coincidental. The 400th, 500th and 600th edits were semi-fixed, as in I wanted to edit that article for the milestone and then found a genuine area to improve. The 1,750th edit was reverting a section blanking on my old school. An apparently I hit the wrong F1 for my 2,500th edit.

Formula One

[edit]

Please note this list is intentionally left incomplete. I have what in theory should be over 100 car books and nearly all of these are F1-related. I have not and will not list them all (yet).

  • Mike Lang's Grand Prix!, all four volumes
  • Official F1 Yearbooks: 1989–1990 (FIA ones I think), 1997–2007
  • F1 Yearbooks (Autosport): 2007–2015
  • F1 Photo Yearbooks: 1985, 2000
  • In-depth Yearbooks from 2001, 2002 and 2003 (though the 2003 one is full of adverts and few words)
  • Grand Prix Data Book (2005 edition)
  • ITV/BBC Sport Guides: 1999–2018
  • A 1999 review
  • A 1996 preview
  • History of Ferrari and Inside Ferrari
  • A few books on Michael Schumacher
  • 1997 Encyclopedia
  • 2001 and 2002 editions of the same encyclopedia
  • A humourous 1997 season review
  • Alan Henry's top 100 drivers
  • Grand Prix Heroes
  • Andrew van de Burgt's book on Lewis Hamilton
  • An Ayrton Senna biography
  • A Jacques Villeneuve biography
  • Damon Hill's 1996 season
  • Jenson Button's 2009 season
  • A Nigel Mansell biography (up to the point he clinched the championship)
  • Grand Prix circuits
  • A few more encyclopedias (including one from The Daily Telegraph)
  • F1 Top Tens

Additionally:

  • F1 Racing magazine: 10 2004 issues, two from 2006, most issues since Monaco 2009
  • Indycar Yearbooks: 2004
  • A history of motor racing
  • A history of Donington Park
  • A tiny Motorcycling book on 2004's British Motorcycling events
  • Mad cars (not motor racing)

A good discussion vs. one in the F1 WikiProject

[edit]
Stage Good discussion F1 WikiProject discussion
1 Potentially contentious point is raised. Point which is basically all but completely irrelevant in the grand scheme of things gets raised.
2 Counter-point is raised. Complete and utter opposite view is argued as undeniable fact.
3 Discussion between points takes place, with pros and cons understood by both sides. Argument between points takes place, with no-one letting the other side gain any ground.
4 Realisation that agreement will not be reached unless a new idea is suggested. Bold text gets brought out to secure own view.
5 A compromise or two gets suggested. Links to policy start being written.
6 One of the compromises suggested gets adjusted to suit all parties. Discussion actually goes off-topic as personal attacks fly across.
7 Compromise gets implemented and everyone is satisfied. Someone from outside the discussion sorts out the issue (with logic) just as everyone was losing the will to live.

I've added anchors to the stages of the discussion in case anyone wishes to cite on an F1 WikiProject where we are...
