Gaillard I of Charsianon

[edit]

Gaillard I of Charsianon(c.1088 - 1150), also known as Gaillard Ironside, Great Prince Gaillard, or Gaillard Martel, was the Norman Prince of Charsianon from 1198 to his death. He was the son of Humphrey I, Prince of Charsianon. He was educated by both his father and Herman de Heraklea, a Norman magnate and lieutenant to his father. Unique to the Normans of Charsianon among the high nobility of the medieval world, he was given a knightly education[1], similar to his father and grandfather, Roussel de Bailleul. His education included combat, riding, the management of estates, and the leading of men[2]. Whatever plans would've been in place for the succession were uprooted when his father died soon after an expedition in Cilicia, where he was fighting as an ally of the byzantines. As a result, a regency council was rapidly set up in order to rule and continue his education. de Heraklea was made to be his guardian, and complete the boy's education[3]. In 1002, the first crusade was declared, and a 14-year-old Gaillard was ecstatic to join[4]. His handlers held him back, however. Most likely because they didn't trust a 16-year-old to go on campaign[5].

In any case, by the time Gaillard was 16, he ignored their advice, dismissing his councillors and raising an army of 1,800 men and 150 knights[6]. He was defeated at the Battle of Lamas, losing 700 men and being forced to return back to Charsianon. The battle wounded his pride, and he took it out on his lieutenants[7], however he soon launched an aborted invasion of Seljuk lands in an attempt to capitalise on instability. Gaillard would marry a Russian princess named Praxida, quickly producing children with her.
